Fairmont Chateau Laurier

Fairmont Chateau Laurier

The Fairmont Chateau Laurier is a grand hotel that stands on a busy street corner, steps from Parliament Hill. The castle-like limestone exterior with the copper roof and the beautiful, elegant interior remind you of a French chateau. Brass stair rails, marble floors, vaulted ceilings, antiques and beautiful carpets bring one word to mind: LUXURY

The Chateau Laurier was built in 1907, commissioned by Charles Melville Hays, the General Manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway of Canada. The hotel was scheduled to open in 1912 but unfortunately, Charles Melville Hays perished on the ill-fated Titanic.

Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the Prime Minister of Canada, had helped secure the site for construction and the hotel was eventually named in his honor. He was present at the opening ceremony some months after Hays died.

The design of the building was originally conceived by Bradford Gilbert, an architect from New York, but the Montreal firm of Ross and Macfarlane were hired to complete the design when the New York architect was dismissed due to disagreements with Grand Trunk executives. The hotel was tied closely with the Grand Trunk (later part of the Canadian National Railway) and Union Station, built across the street.

The Fairmont Chateau Laurier has been called “the third chamber of Parliament”–a reference to the proximity to Parliament as well as it being the home and meeting place for notable political figures through the years.

The hotel features 429 guest rooms, among them, 33 luxury suites.

The hotel features three restaurants and bars. Wilfrid’s is an a award-winning restaurant that features regional Canadian cuisine with views of the Parliament Buildings and Rideau Locks. Zoe’s Lounge offers afternoon tea, cocktail hour and evening entertainment. La Terrasse (open seasonally) is an outdoor terrace with a view of Parliament, the Rideau Canal and the Ottawa River (weather permitting).

The hotel also offers an indoor pool and exercise room. The Fairmont Chateau Laurier partners with Holtz Spa (one block away) to offer spa treatments.
